Back Up Yourself – Maintain flow through flexible focus

You know what you want to do. You may even know exactly what needs to be done, and yet sometimes you find yourself pulling back. You postpone the task, lose energy or start thinking too much about it. Sometimes something else suddenly seems more important, or you keep waiting until you feel ready.

We often describe procrastination as a lack of discipline. But putting something off can also be a response to what an action represents internally. A task may carry pressure because you are afraid of being judged, because you want to get it right or because you feel that you have something to prove.

When the pressure becomes too high, delaying the task can provide temporary relief. The problem is that this relief can reinforce the pattern and make it harder to start the next time.

This is why procrastination can be useful information. It can tell us something about what happens when we approach a particular task and what makes action difficult in that moment.

  • What makes this particular action difficult for you?
  • What is happening for you when you find yourself pulling back?
  • What are you expecting from yourself in this situation?
  • What would make it easier for you to take the next step?

Sometimes stepping back is avoidance. At other times, a pause gives you the space you need before moving forward. The important part is becoming aware of what is happening and deciding how you want to respond.

In this workshop

We explored the connection between meaning, safety, beliefs, the nervous system, the body and action. We looked at what can happen when these parts of our experience are no longer aligned.

You will learn how to:

  • Understand your resistance

Recognise what can sit behind procrastination, hesitation and loss of energy. This can include overwhelm, fear of judgement or the pressure created by perfectionism.

  • Read your body’s signals

Notice what happens in your body when you are approaching something that feels difficult. Physical sensations can give you useful information before you decide what to do next.

  • Question the beliefs creating pressure

Explore what you believe you have to prove and what you expect from yourself when you take action.

  • Use pauses deliberately

Learn to recognise when you are stepping back because you are avoiding something and when you need some space before you can move forward.

  • Turn intention into action

Work with small steps and a pace that allows you to move towards what matters without putting yourself under unnecessary pressure.

  • Build sustainable self-leadership

Develop a way of staying connected to what matters while allowing for changes in energy and motivation.
